No matter how good a lion you are, you can’t see well if you’re surrounded by nothing but fog.

Most-Loved Authors of 2022

January 07, 2023 in EOTY

I originally posted this as part of my 2022 year-end review, but decided it worked better as a stand-alone.

These are the authors who appeared in the top quintile (29 books/series) of the 141 I made a serious effort to read in 2022. Why does this matter? I don’t know, really. It just made me happy figuring out how this had worked out over the year, and I was interested in the results.

Author/editor names link to their site or to the book/magazine’s site.

Breaking my reading down, my most-appreciated authors and editors were:

  •  Jessie Kwak (three series in the top quintile as both author and editor: Nanshe Chronicles, Bulari series, Crooked V1&2)

  • Kerstin Hall (Border Keeper, Second Spear)

  • Rachel Aukes (Flight of the Javelin, Space Junk)

  • Saad Z. Hossein (Kundo Wakes Up, Cyber Mage)

  • Tade Thompson (Making Wolf, Legacy of Molly Southbourne)

  • A.K. Larkwood (The Thousand Eyes)

  • Christian Bose (The Kill Chain)

  • CL Polk (Witchmark)

  • Dean M. Cole (Dimension Space series)

  • DM Pruden (The Ares Weapon)

  • Eric Flint (ed.) (The Best of Jim Baen’s Universe)

  • Erin K. Wagner (An Unnatural Life)

  • Jefferson Smith (ed.) (Immerse or Die Novel Smackdown)

  • John Scalzi (The Interdependency Trilogy)

  • Mahvesh Murad/Lavie Tidhard (eds.) (The Apex Book of World SF 4)

  • Marc Bloch (Strange Defeat)

  • Mike Myers/Adrian Collins (eds.) (Knee-Deep in Grit)

  • P. Djeli Clark (A Master of Djinn)

  • Sarah Pinsker (Two Truths and a Lie)

  • Silvia Moren-Garcia (ed.) (The Dark Magazine #90)

  • Steven Johnson (Enemy of All Mankind)

  • Wendy N. Wagner (ed.) (Nightmare Magazine #121)

  • Yudhanjaya Wijeratne (The Slow, Sad Suicide of Rohan Wijeratne)

Top fifth or not, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to explore so many visions of new and different worlds, from so many perspectives.
